Welcome to Year 1!
A very busy and fun packed week with our trip to Kew Gardens on Monday! It was great to see the children fully immersed in all the natural wonders Kew has to offer and it was lovely hearing all their facts and knowledege about the seasons!
 
Lining up
Please continue to encourage your children to line up in their allocated lines before school. We have seen a big improvement however, we still have lots of children running around the playground or standing with parents. 
 
Reminder:
Just a reminder that children are able to wear trainers on PE day or days that they have a sports club, however, on normal school days, it is expected that all children come to school in their usual school uniform wearing black school shoes. Please no small boots or trainers, thanking you in advance. 
 
Please can we make sure that all jumpers other bits of clothes are labelled as we are still learning how to keep track of our items. Just a reminder that all children need to wear black school shoes and black trainers on PE days only, thank you. 
 
It is super important that we have water bottles in school as well, also please be advised that fruit is provided daily to every child in Year 1.
 
PE days:

Reading books:

Your child will be sent home with a Phonics reading book and a free reader. Please return both books along with the reading record on a Monday. If books are not sent in or a comment made in reading records we cannot guarentee that books will be changed. Also please keep your child's book in their book bag everyday as we will read these in school at times too.

Stationery:

Otters are in need of glue sticks please - these can be brought for a very good price on parentmail (cheaper than in the shops)!

Tissues/ Kitchen towel:

Ducks are in need of some tissues and kitchen towel please.

English:
We will be editing our own story inspired by 'The Queen's Hat'. We will be chekcing for any missed capital letters and puncuation as well as editing a sentence to make it even better! 
 
Handwriting focus (cursive with a lead in and flick to support joining):

Maths:
We will be recapping learned topics over the year to ensure we're ready for Year 2.

PE:
In PE with Miss Panners/ Miss Burnham we will be doing rounders
In PE with Coach Stan we will be doing athletics 
 
Foundation Topic: Design and Technology
We will be looking at designing and making a toy on a moving axis. We will need to cut out the wheels and secure with wooden dowels to ensure our toy can move. We will then add our design and check it works. Our last step will be to evaluate. Ducks will require some toilet roll tubes for this please!
 
Phonics
Miss Panners - Recapping all of set 3 sounds.
 
Miss Burnham - Recapping all set 3 and some alternative sounds
 
Mrs Lyons/Mrs Mills - Recapping end of set 3 sounds and alternative sounds.

English:  See sheet. This does not need to be printed. Please encourage the children to use some of the key words provided alongside the image, also please encourage the children to use some of their adjectives to describe the picture in their writing as this has been our focus this week in English.
 
Maths Practice Journal:  
If you have already started the Journal, please do not worry. You can work through at any pace you like we only offer reccomened pages as new concepts might be tricky.
 
 
In addition to these please do practice skills such as:
- Taking off your jumpers and being able to turn them the right way round.
- Using a knife and fork to cut up food.
- Sticking in a sheet in a book or on another piece of paper.
- Tying up shoe laces.
- Identifying personal items such as a coat & waterbottle.
- Identifying their name on personal items.

While we appreciate the sense of community these groups can create, discussions about individual children’s learning, progress, or personal matters should not be shared in these spaces. This information is private, and children may not feel comfortable having their personal learning details discussed publicly.

We’d also like to remind parents about our approach to home learning. Any activities sent home are optional and are intended as extra practice and support. As shared in our Meet the Teacher meeting (which can be revisited on the class page), the only regular home learning we will be sending each term is the red words, in line with the Reception approach, for children to practise at home. We also ask that children are encouraged to read at home regularly.
