Summer 2,  Week 6
 
In maths, the children will be learning about quadrilaterals and polygons (regular and irregular) before delving into symmetry.
 
In English, the children will continue with their poetry unit where they will be learning to structure their own lines for a poem and write their own lines using 'Still I Rise' by Maya Angelou as inspiration. We will also be revising our punctution and grammar rules and skills for our assessments.
 
Spelling (for a test Friday 26th June): 
Group 1 (Miss McH & Miss Davies): Adverbs of Frequency and Possibility

Example Words: regularly, frequently, occasionally, probably, rarely   Red words: separate, guessed, breathe, parties, antique

Group 2 (Mrs Hunt): Words with a short /u/ sound spelt with ‘u’

Example Words: country, cousin, courage, trouble Red words: through, woman, women

In Science, we will 

In Geography, the children will find out about people who live in deserts.

In R.E, the children will continue the unit 'Does faith guide people to make the world a fairer place?' and will be looking at Jesus' Golden Rule, 'Do to others what you would have them do to you.' (Matthew 7:12)

In PSHE, we will be continuing our RSE (Relationship & sex education) unit and will be looking at characteristics of healthy relationships (what makes a good friend, what to do if a relationship is making us feel unhappy)

The Maths Factor wesbite (a maths site set up by Carol Vorderman, see left) has a great section that the children can use to prepare themselves for the Multiplication Tables Check which takes place in June.
 
Children can see how they get on and can also get a full report on how they did which you can look at.  It will also show where they went wrong. Click on the picture to have a go!

In Year 4, children are expected to learn a list of statutory words. You'll find these below in the weekly learning.  They will also be learning a spelling rule or spelling pattern which they will need to apply and show evidence of within their writing.
In class, we will select 5 statutory words and 10 words which feature a spelling rule/spelling pattern to focus on each week.  The children will receive these 15 spellings on a Monday and be given several opportunities over the next 2 weeks to practise them.  Every other Friday, we will have a short spelling quiz which will check their spelling of the 5 statutory words and will assess if they can apply the spelling rule that has been taught. The application means that they may not have seen the word before but it will follow the same application as the rule. 

The spelling rule and statutory words can be found below under 'Next Week's Learning'.  Please encourage the children to practice their selected spelling rule and statutory words by playing games at home, writing the words in the air or playing a snap game with family or friends.

• Pupils are required to read for 15+ minutes each day and should record this in their reading record. Parents should also be recording in pupil's reading record multiple times a week.
• Pupils should be learning their times tables as a priority.  Not only will this support all of their maths learning across the curriculum, it will ensure that they perform as well as they can in the statutory assessments (Multiplication Tables Check) at the end of the year.  We have a number of interactive online subscriptions to support the children with learning their tables which will hopefully make it more fun. (TTRS is great and there are MANY other websites and games and printables you can use).
• Pupils should practise using the spelling rules taught and practised in class.

Reading at Home
 
Please continue to listen to your child read to you at home.  It is great to hear that lots of the children are reading to themselves, but it is so important that they continue to read to an adult and explore texts in more detail through discussion.  I have attached below a bookmark template which lists a variety of prompt questions that you could use to elicit discussion with your child. 
 
Please also read to your child as it is essential that they have the opportunity to hear reading modelled for them and to introduce new vocabulary. Reading to children shouldn't stop when they can read independently! Regular shared reading with your child will have an enormous impact not only on their reading skills, but will also improve their writing as well as every other subject. As the children move through the school, all subjects become increasingly reliant on the ability to speed read, skim, analyse and critique texts and sources.
 
All reading should be recorded in pupil's reading records, children can record their own independent reading with parents recording their joint reading once or twice a week.
